If I had a million dollars

Everyone has their typical responses to: "if I had a million dollars..." but I'm starting to re-evaluate mine. Some of the things I want can't be bought with money. Most of the things I need don't correspond to the things I want.

You come to some point of realization that you know you will always be working. Most of the time, just to pay the bills and provide food and shelter. I'm slowly, very slowly, coming to grips with the rarity of financial success. That is...the success in the eyes of the world.

Do I think I am successful? Yes. Would most people see me as such? Probably not. I don't drive a fancy car, I don't own my home and I can't afford to fly away for a two-week vacation. However, I do have an extremely understanding wife who lets me experiment in my hobbies without too much complaint. I have a steady job that is somewhat enjoyable. I rent a modest house (with a pool) in a really expensive town. In a year, I'll have paid off my 1996 Chrysler. Hopefully it will make it to 200,000 miles...sans air conditioning.

So, if I had a million dollars? Put a sizable down payment a house a bit larger than we are in, but affordable to Los Angeles standards. Probably adopt a child. Take a little time off to visit some of my family I haven't seen in a while.

Okay, maybe it isn't much different than what you would say, but it is much different than I would have said five years ago.
